Traditional library designs frequently shortchanged the library’s younger users; children’s library spaces were often undersized and often did not adequately address the various stages of child development. Studio GC worked with the Bedford Park Public Library District to re-envision their lower-level children’s library. The new design replaced the dark, 1970’s design with a stimulating, bright environment that offers children and their caregivers a range of library experiences. Loosely based on a “Main Street” concept, the new library features “storefronts” that provide a children’s activity room, an open play area, a children’s computing zone and an abstract “house” that lets children create their own games and stories.
